Diana Chepkemoi Sigei made her marathon debut in Dubai in 2011 with a solid sixth-place 2:26:53. Later that fall she finished fourth in Toronto. Also in 2011, she was runner up at the ten-mile Dam tot Damloop in Amsterdam, in a personal best 52:46; fourth at the Lille Half Marathon in 1:10:42; third at the Nice Half Marathon; second at the Berlin 25K, in a personal best 1:26:14; and third at the Le Puy-en-Velay 15K in a personal best 51:13.

Last year she placed second in both the Lille (68:08 personal best) and Lisbon Half Marathons before running Boston. With unprecedented heat on race day, Sigei concentrated on place, rather than time, and finished fifth amongst a highly competitive field. “Boston was very, very, hot and I really suffered during the race,” said Sigei. “My fighting spirit kept me alive, but I could have done much better. My agent and coach keep saying that I can win the Boston Marathon, so that is also one of the reasons I am back.”

Sigei ran the Amsterdam Marathon this past October and finished fourth.

Sigei is married to Henry Kipsang, a 2:17 marathoner, and is sister-in-law to Salim Kipsang, the winner of the 2005 Paris and 2009 Tokyo Marathons. Her husband encouraged her to start running after the birth of the couple’s son. Sigei says returning to form was tough, but she started to see some improvement in her running when she joined coach Patrick Sang’s group in 2010. She trains in Chirchir-Centre near Kaptagat and is the only woman in her training group.
